Moorea: Moorea Pearl
Resort & Spa: "Our favorite"
Houston, Texas
|

My husband and
I spent 4 nights of our recent Honeymoon in an overwater
bungalow here. We found the room and service exceptional.
We spoke as much French and Tahitian as we could, which
was hardly any, and received warm welcome for our efforts.
(Ia Orana, or "Youranna", means goodday, "Maruru" means
thank you, "Nana" means goodbye, and "Maitai" means good).
We rented a scooter for $55 and took an unguided but
highly enjoyable circle-island tour. We stopped frequently
for snacks and pictures. We liked Le Petite Village on the
Northwest corner of the island for trinket shopping and
crepes at the Internet/Creperie (best crepes on all the
islands - trust me because I tried them all!). We were
advised not to drive up to the Belvedere lookout point on
a scooter because they didn't have enough power to get you
down safely, so...
We rented bikes another day for a few dollars a piece and
went to the top of Belvedere. It was a long ride (1 hour
up?) and we had to walk our bikes for several of the
steepest portions of the trek. It was just challenging
enough to be very rewarding. We made the mistake of
continuing to ride around the island. The two trips were
too much for one day, but either would be enjoyable on
their own.
We hope you enjoy the following restaurants as much as we
did:
Le Nouveaux Mondes - great French food is enjoyed best off
the menu: ask for the coconut curry sauce on mahi mahi.
Expect relaxed service and a lot of English speakers here.
Call for pick-up at 56.44.24.
Alfreddo's - liked it so much we ate here twice. Go on
Sunday for a lively crowd with the legendary Ron Falconer
on auto-harp and harmonica playing American classics. We
went with other honeymooners from the resort and got a
table together which was perfect for the atmosphere. Best
Italian dishes were Osso Bucco and the creamy tortellini.
Call for pick-up at 56.17.71. Closed Monday.
Linareva Floating Restaurant & Bar - this was my husband's
favorite. On the opposite side of the island, I doubt they
pick you up so visit this place while on a tour. It is a
restaurant/bar made out of the first ferry between Moorea
and Tahiti. It is on the water, so avoid this place on a
stormy day if you get seasick. Exceptional French food and
pleasant service.
Shopping advice:
PEARLS: Ladies, leave your husband next door and your
wedding rings with him, grab his credit card and say
you're a travel agent. In negotiations, single women have
a huge advantage over honeymooners and single men. The
salespeople figure guys will spend anything to make their
women happy, especially during a honeymoon, and that the
men do not know any better than to blow a load on these
totally illegitimate trinkets. Don't fall for it! You can
get a nice sized, high quality pearl for $100 (starting at
$390). Be nice, and if they won't give it to you for a
reasonable price, walk out and find someone else who will.
Remember: these pearls are not precious items and not
certifiable in any way, so be skeptic and thrifty during
negotiations!
